These consultations are aimed at Designated Teachers who have previously looked after children and no current looked after children. It outlines their role in supporting children and young people in care.

  • To understand the role of Virtual School Kent
  • To understand the duties and obligations for the Designated Teacher for previously looked after children.

These consultations are aimed at Designated Teachers in other local authorities who have Kent looked after children on roll. It outlines their role in supporting children and young people in care.

  • To outline statutory emergence of role of Designated Teacher
  • To understand the role of Virtual School Kent
  • To understand the duties and obligations for the Designated Teacher for children from out of county.
  • Find out what funding streams are available.

Personalised Education Plan (PEP) Training

This training is for professionals involved in the PEP process for children in care and aims to enhance the quality and effectiveness of education planning for them in order to raise educational achievement.

The key mechanism for addressing the needs of the child or young person and improving their attainment is the PEP DCSF(2009) Improving the Educational Attainment of Children in Care

Objectives:

  • To understand the legal framework surrounding the PEP
  • To understand the importance of PEPs and where they fit with other planning
  • To understand professional roles with the PEP
  • To improve the quality of the PEP and the outcomes for children and young people.

VSK Area Designated Teacher meetings

Each of the four Area Teams of VSK have regular Designated Teacher Updates, including adhoc training and discussions with Designated Teachers in your area. Please contact your local area team for more information. This is an opportunity for Designated Teachers to receive the most up to date national guidance and hear about local developments to support them in the statutory role of Designated Teacher.

Objectives:

  • To be aware of the current statutory guidance and best practice to support the education of children in care
  • To contribute to local development and best practice through networking with other Designated Teachers and Local Educational Professionals
  • To raise issues across schools in localities
  • To receive targeted update and training based on your (Designated Teachers) needs.

Training for staff supporting Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children

The VSK USAC team can offer the following training to schools:

  • Working with Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children an overview: nationalities , backgrounds, health, culture, agencies and VSK
  • Achieving positive outcomes for UASC – based on the lessons from recent research, the training looks at what works to ensure positive outcomes for these young people within schools and foster homes.
  • Promoting accredited English Exams for school age UASC – Using the Cambridge University English Qualifications framework.
