School governors have an important role to play in championing the needs of Children in Care on their roll. They should ensure that Designated Teachers and other relevant staff understand how to actively support local authorities in promoting the educational achievement of Children in Care. In particular, they can ensure that the needs of Children in Care are reflected in the school’s development plan and self-evaluation.
DfE guidance is clear that Schools and governing bodies should promote better outcomes for Children in Care by:
- Appointing a Designated Teacher to promote the educational achievement of Children in Care in their school and ensure that this person is empowered to champion the needs of these pupils, influence policy and practice across the school and ensure early intervention for any children in difficulty
- Identify a named designated governor to monitor the progress made by Children in Care.
- Ensuring all Children in Care have a Personal Education Plan (PEP) in place.
- Inviting their VSK Assistant Head (Progress & Achievement) to provide regular training and information
- Providing details of all Children in Care, their progress and attendance to the Assistant Head (Progress & Achievement), using the audit form sent to schools each term.
