Realising the potential of Children in Care

Activity Information for Post16 UASC

Young Adults Council (YAC)
The Virtual School Kent Apprentices help to organise and support council meetings for children and young people in care. These meetings are set to help you have your say on what it is like being in care and what you would like to change. Council Members and Directors from Social Services and Specialist Children’s Services come to listen to what you have to say, and your opinions help make positive changes.

YAC is a group of young people who meet every 6-8 weeks in a central location in Kent. This group was started at the beginning of 2015 and since then we have seen membership grow. At these meetings we talk about things that matter to older children in care and young care leavers such as accommodation, life skills and further education. Recently the group have helped to redesign the pathway plan, given feedback on floating support and accommodation issues. Members can also take part in interview panels once trained.

Youth Hubs

They can also drop in and meet with local advisers and get specialist support. Volunteering
This can be an excellent way to build on skills and learn some new ones – you may wish to volunteer alongside any education you are accessing, or whilst waiting to begin an education course. For more information visit: http://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure-and-community/volunteering
