Realising the potential of Children in Care

CONFERENCE: How your Local Authority can make a difference for UASC & Young People.

Posted on by Judy Molyneux

On 28th June Kent’s Specialist Children’s Services are hosting a conference at Oakwood House in Maidstone titled ‘Our Journeys - Travelling Towards Success Together’. Utilising Kent’s experience with Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Young People to focus our minds towards achieving excellent placement, educational and well-being outcomes and community integration.

Aims: In December 2015 headlines read “Child asylum seeker services ‘at breaking point’, says Kent County Council” following a summer of unprecedented numbers of Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) arrivals putting pressure on staff, resources and local communities across the county.

In July 2016 the National Transfer Scheme came into being and other local authorities are now challenged with similar issues faced by Kent and are looking for guidance and good practice examples to help them with this new field of work. Many colleagues have been interested in finding out what worked, and what didn’t for Kent especially in light of the recent Ofsted Inspection Report that highlighted our good work with UASC and ongoing commitment.

This conference will focus on sharing good practice around assessment, care, education, health and wellbeing of the Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Young People. Guest speakers and a series of workshops will be included.

Who should attend: Local Authority Members Education Professionals, Social Work Practitioners, Virtual School Professionals, Fostering Practitioners, Accommodation and Health Professionals, Supporting Networks.

Fee: £75 for one delegate or £50 per delegate for 2 or more. Includes lunch. Accommodation (limited) is available for the night before / night after the conference at the conference venue at a discounted rate. Contact Oakwood House Hotel (01622 620720) and quote ‘UASC Conference’.
